1. Military Have Substantially Defeated Boko Haram, Bandits – FG

The Federal Government has said the Nigerian military has defeated Boko Haram terrorists and bandits holding sway in the country. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made the disclosure at a joint press briefing held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday. Mohammed was joined at the briefing by three other ministers namely Maj-Gen. Bashir Magashi (Defence); Rauf Aregbesola (Interior) and Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi (Police Affairs). The four ministers were also joined by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Leo Irabor, Naija News reports. According to Mohammed, the country has overcome the high scale of terrorist attacks, stressing that terrorists and bandits have no place to hide anymore. The minister, however, said that the nation may still witness isolated cases of security challenges in the North and other parts of the country.

2. FG Finally Suspends Proposed Telecoms Tax

The Muhammadu Buhari-led Government has suspended the proposed tax on telecommunication services. Naija News reports that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, made this known on Monday in Abuja. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee on Excise Duty for the Digital Economy Sector, Pantami said the telecommunications sector is already overburdened by excessive and multiple taxations. Recall that the government through the Budget Office of the Federation had earlier revealed that it would begin the implementation of its proposed excise duties on telecommunication services and beverages in 2023. However, Pantami rejected the five per cent tax on telecom services, saying that the implementation of the tax would increase the cost of telecommunication services for Nigerians.

3. Northern Cyprus Is Safer Than Nigeria – Nigerians Abroad Slam Abike Dabiri-Erewa

Nigerians living in Northern Cyprus have condemned a comment from the chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, warning people not to travel to the country. Naija News recalls that Dabiri-Erewa, had in August, warned Nigerian students against going to Northern Cyprus, saying many students have been killed in the area, which she said was not recognized by the United Nations. However, reacting to the statement on Monday, the Lefkosa Coordinator of the Nigerian Community in Northern Cyprus, Daniel Oyelaja said that Dabiri-Erewa should apologize for misleading the masses. He said: “The Nigerian community in Northern Cyprus says no to misinformation. The misinformation about the Turkish of Northern Cyprus is uncalled for from the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri. “We are glad to tell the whole world that Northern Cyprus is safe.” The coordinator insisted that Northern Cyprus is safer than any part of Nigeria.

4. Bishop Kukah Identifies Those Responsible For Nigeria’s Problem

Renowned Christian cleric, Bishop Matthew Kukah has identified those responsible for the problems bedevilling the country, Naija News reports. The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto while appearing live on the TVC News Breakfast show on Monday morning said irresponsible leaders are the major cause of the country’s challenges. Against the popular narrative that religion is causing division among citizens, Bishop Kukah said there is no problem between the two major major religious groups of the country. According to him, Christians and Muslims are practising their belief separately as the country’s constitution has granted but public office holders and some irresponsible religious leaders are responsible for distorting the minds of the citizens against each other. He said some irresponsible leaders hide under the guise of religion to cause oppression rather than for liberation.

5. PDP Crisis: I Will Crush My Enemies, Won’t Leave Them For God – Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike on Monday said he would crush his enemies and not leave them for God. Wike’s statement is coming amidst the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 general elections. The Rivers State Governor on Monday had said the Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu during a flight together asked him to hand over the crisis to God. Wike noted that he told Ikpeazu that God has given him the power to crush his enemies, hence the need to handle it himself. According to Wike, God has other things to handle and he also has his part to play. The PDP Governor further stated that now that he has the opportunity to deal with his enemies, he would do it well. Wike while commissioning the Osisioma Flyover in Abia State promised to deal with people talking in his state.

6. Lagos Commissioner Resigns After Multiple Building Collapse

The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Idris Salako, has tendered his resignation following the latest collapse of a seven-storey structure in the early hours of Sunday on Oba Idowu Oniru Street, near Palace Road in Oniru. The Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, made the announcement in a statement on Monday, adding that Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu accepted the resignation of the commissioner. Even though the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, did not state with emphasis reason for his resignation, he said it was part of the restructuring of the ministry. The Comissioner is said to be leaving the position following the recurring building collapses in state over the past few years.

7. Terrorists, Bandits Are Now On The Run – Magashi

The Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi (rtd), says Boko Haram terrorists and bandits are now on the run from the Nigerian military. Speaking at a joint press briefing held in Abuja on Monday, Magashi said the Federal Government will not relent until terrorists and bandits have been crushed. Magashi was joined at the briefing by three other ministers namely Lai Mohammed (Information and Culture); Rauf Aregbesola (Interior) and Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi (Police Affairs). The four ministers were also joined by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Leo Irabor. Magashi said that the military and other security agencies have been able to contain the daunting security challenges facing the country. The minister tasked Nigerians to alert security agents if they observe any criminal activities in their community, stating that security is the business of everyone.

8. Miyetti Allah Sends Strong Message To Soludo Over Cattle Ban In Anambra

The leadership of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has appealed to Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo to temporarily suspend the ban on cattle movement on foot in the state. The appeal was made on Monday by the Southeast leader of MACBAN, Alhaji Gidado Sidikki, in Awka, Anambra State. He said the ban is too sudden and many of the cattle rearers have no other means of livelihood, arguing that the ban will have a negative effect on them and their livelihood. Sidikki used the point that MACBAN members have been living peacefully in the state as part of the points to strengthen his appeal.

9. Ayu’s Resignation: APC Plotting Constitutional Crisis In PDP – Dino Melaye

The spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organization, Dino Melaye has said that the All Progressives Congress, APC is responsible for calls for the removal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu. Malaye stated this on Monday while speaking during a podcast organized by the leadership newspaper. Naija News reports that the crisis in the PDP began after the fall out in the presidential primaries in June which produced Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the party. Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike had been displeased with the outcome of the election and accused the PDP of manipulating the event. Wike and his supporters therefore called for the removal of Ayu, insisting that it is the only way balance will be restored in the party. However, Melaye has alleged that those who want Ayu to vacate the position are from the ruling party.

10. 2023: Tinubu Camp Speaks On Obasanjo Supporting Peter Obi

The Tinubu Campaign Organisation has refuted claims that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is supporting the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi. Naija News recalls that Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) alongside his running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, had met with Obasanjo on July 17. On August 25, Obasanjo alongside Obi met with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in London. The former President had also met with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu and some of his allies at his Ota residence. Speaking with The Punch, the spokesman of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation, Bayo Onanuga, stated that Obasanjo is not supporting any candidate. Onanuga said all the presidential candidates have been visiting Obasanjo as an elder statesman to seek his blessing and not to solicit his support for the 2023 presidential election.
