The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday, will determine the fate of its national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
There had been calls for Ayu to resign from office following the emergence of the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar from the north. The camp of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike had called for Ayu's resignation as part of its demands to support Atiku in 2023. The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party is expected to determine the fate of Ayu during its meeting slated for Thursday, September 8, 2022. A source that spoke with Vanguard said some senior members of the National Working Committee (NWC) meet on Monday to stop the move to remove Ayu from office. Another source noted that loyalists of Governor Wike are thinking of filing a lawsuit to challenge the process that brought Ayu into office. The source while speaking on the aim of the meeting said, “The NEC meeting will hold this Thursday and they will decide on Ayu’s matter. What we know is that some NEC members are saying Ayu must go. Thursday is a big day for the party and it will either make or mar the party.”Ayu Planning To Halt His Removal From Office
The National Chairman of PDP, Ayu is planning to stop NEC members from discussing the call for his resignation from the meeting. A source disclosed that PDP Governors would be at the meeting, adding if anyone raises the call for his resignation Ayu would say it's not on the agenda. The source disclosed that people calling for Ayu's resignation are planning a court case against him. According to the source, they are planning to argue that Ayu was not elected, but was selected.
