PDP Set To Petition Abdulsalami's Peace Panel Over Atiku's Convoy Attack

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has promised to petition the National Peace Committee over the attack on the convoy of its Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Director of the Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation on Strategic Communications, Dele Momodu, stated this while addressing a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Naija News recalls that Atiku's campaign convoy was attacked on Wednesday in Maiduguri by suspected thugs, in which several persons were injured and dozens of vehicles vandalized.

The PDP had accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being responsible for the incident, which was denied by the ruling party. The Borno State Police Command also denied any report of an attack.

Speaking at the press conference, Momodu said the party would formally report the attack on Atiku’s convoy to the Peace Committee led by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar.

The PDP chieftain said the party's plan to report to the peace committee was because a peace accord was signed by most of the presidential candidates to eschew violence before, during after the 2023 elections.

He added that the PDP was also preparing the evidence that would be presented to the committee and the Nigeria Police Force, saying that the attacks are threats to the lives of party members.

Momodu, therefore, expressed his party’s concern over the violence on the campaign trail and berated the Borno State Police Command for denying the attack.

He said, "When we say we are going to make a formal report it is not that it has not been reported. We have a Director of security at the Atiku Campaign Organisation. The director, as I speak to you, is compiling evidence of what happened.

"When we do that we will also send to the peace committee to know that these people are threatening the peace of fellow Nigerians; that is what we mean by a formal report.

‘’Yesterday (Wednesday), we were attacked in Borno state. We’ve been attacked in Kaduna and it’s so unfortunate because there was a peace accord that was signed by most of the presidential candidates. So, we plan to report formally to the security authorities, we plan to report to the Peace Commission because democracy is not by force, it is a game of choice."

Momodu, described the attack on Atiku's convoy in Borno as sad and unfortunate, stressing that such an incident should not be happening at this time.

He said, "So if I choose to support my candidate, there shouldn’t be any problem with that. So firing Dane guns, throwing stones and all manner of weapons, for me, is a very unfortunate development.’’
