Twitter is currently testing the much-requested Edit Tweet feature. After years of memes and jokes, editable tweets will be available to select Twitter Blue followers later this month.
The feature is currently being "internally tested" and appears to mimic Facebook in its editing style, with linked editing history for tweets we saw in leaks earlier this year. Tweets can be edited multiple times within 30 minutes of posting to the Twitter blog. “Edited Tweets are displayed with an icon, timestamp and label so it's clear to readers that the original Tweet was edited.” The edit tag contains a full edit history, with previous versions of the edited tweet. Twitter says it is initially testing editable tweets with a small group to capture early issues. “That includes how people can abuse the feature. You can never be too careful,” says Twitter. After initial internal testing is complete, the Edit Tweet feature will be rolled out to select Twitter Blue followers later this month. “The test will initially be localized to a single country and will expand as we learn and observe how people use Edit Tweet,” explains Twitter. Jay Sullivan, Twitter's vice president of consumer products, said earlier this year that editing a tweet "has been the most requested Twitter feature for many years." Although much is asked, there are also concerns about abuse. Former CEO Jack Dorsey objected to a tweet editing feature, saying that in 2020 Twitter would "probably never add" the feature. Facebook, Instagram, Medium, and many other platforms include edit buttons, and there aren't many examples of high-profile abuse. Former Meta security director Alex Stamos reported a cryptocurrency scam with Facebook's edit feature earlier this year, but it's still a rare example. Twitter only talks about editable tweets for its Blue plan, which recently increased its price in the US from $2.99 to $4.99 per month. This means that we probably won't see an edit button for regular users anytime soon. Other features available to Twitter Blue followers include an undo feature to recall tweets before sending them, a customizable navigation bar, a list of top posts shared by the people you follow, and even hex NFT profile pictures. This article was originally published on Naija News
