As the special envoy of the Economic Community of West African Nations (ECOWAS) on the situation in Mali, Jonathan gave updates on the latest developments in the West African nation to President Buhari. The special assistant to President Buhari on digital communications, Bashir Ahmad took to his Twitter account to reveal details of their discussion.

2. DSS Confirms Arrest Of Sheikh Gumi’s Aide, Mamu

Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), has confirmed the arrest of an aide to controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abubakar Ahmad Gum, Tukur Mamu. Mamu’s arrest was confirmed in a statement obtained by Naija News on Wednesday and signed by the DSS Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunaya. The DSS stated that the bandit negotiator was apprehended based on requests from Nigeria’s Military, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence Community to their foreign partners in Cairo, Egypt. The agency said Mamu was arrested to answer critical questions on ongoing investigations relating to some security matters in parts of the country.

3. PDP Crisis: What I Can Say To Wike Is Aluta Continua – Makinde

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has said that the governors who are supporting Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike will continue to fight for their place in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Makinde said this during the commissioning of the Emohua campus of the Rivers State University where he was the special guest of honour. He stated that his camp lost in the presidential primaries because they stood for the truth. He said, “even the fight that we lost, we did not lose with our heads bowed. “We lost knowing that we stood for the truth and we stood for what is good for this country. “What I will say to you (Wike) is Aluta continua. We will continue to fight for our space within the PDP and we will continue to ensure that what is right for our people is given to our people”.

4. PDP Fixes Dates To Hold National Caucus, BoT, NEC Meetings

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to hold its National Caucus meeting on Wednesday amidst the crisis rocking the party. Naija News reports that the PDP National Director of Publicity, Chinwe I. Nnorom, made this known in a statement on Tuesday. The statement revealed that the meeting is scheduled to hold at the Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, by 07:00 pm. It also disclosed that the Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings are slated for Thursday, 8th September 2022, both in Abuja.

5. I Didn’t Say There’s Plot To Get Rid Of Tinubu If He Wins 2023 Election – Awolowo-Dosunmu

The Chairman, African Newspapers of Nigeria Plc, Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, has denied reports claiming that she said there is a plot to get rid of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. Naija News reports that some media outfits had quoted Awolowo-Dosumu as warning Nigerians of a plot to get rid of Tinubu in favour of his running mate, Kashim Shettima if they win the 2023 presidential election. She was said to have urged Yorubas to stop being sentimental and tribalist about the three major candidates, contesting for the office of the presidency. But in a statement on Wednesday, Awolowo-Dosunmu asked members of the public to ignore the fake reports, describing them as false, mischievous and wicked. Awolowo Dosumu said she had not spoken with any journalist in recent times on any matter whatsoever including the 2023 presidential election and the candidates. The Executive Director of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation said she had not been in partisan politics for decades, adding that she has not endorsed nor condemned any candidate or party.

6. 2023: Wike, Fayose Shun Atiku’s Meeting With Ex-PDP Presidential Aspirants

Some prominent personalities were conspicuously missing during a meeting on Wednesday between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and ex-presidential aspirants of the party. Naija News gathered Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose were both missing at the meeting held at the Abuja residence of Atiku. Both PDP chieftains are part of those who contested and lost the 2023 presidential primaries of the PDP and have openly disagreed with the emergence of Atiku as the PDP candidate. However, media mogul, Dele Momodu, former managing director of the now-defunct FSB International Bank; Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, the only female aspirant, Tariela Oliver, and Charles Ugwu all attended the meeting according to The Cable. Atiku won the PDP presidential primary held in May, polling 371 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Governor Wike who secured 237 votes. However, Atiku’s win and the subsequent decision to choose Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate has plunged the party into a crisis.

7. ISWAP Fighters Kill Boko Haram Terrorists In Borno

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have killed scores of Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State. Naija News learned that ISWAP fighters opened fire on their Boko Haram rivals who were escaping military bombardment in the North East state. It was learned that the terrorists were eliminated after running away from troops of the Nigerian military, who had earlier killed 200 Boko Haram fighters and their commanders in a military onslaught. A source told Daily Trust that the military bombardment and the flood in the area forced Boko Haram insurgents to relocate to the east of Konduga Local Government Area of the state. The source said ISWAP fighters attacked the terrorists and their family members when some of them sought refuge in Cina village, Bama Local Government Area of the state. He added that on sighting the Boko Haram terrorists led by two commanders, ISWAP fighters started shooting at them.

8. IPOB Reacts To Attack On Labour Party Members In Enugu

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has denied involvement in last Sunday’s attack on members of the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State. Naija News earlier reported that gunmen suspected to be hoodlums attacked LP members in Aninri and Awgu local government areas of the Enugu state on Sunday during their monthly ward meetings. In a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, IPOB alleged that those behind the attack were sponsored by the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Service (DSS). The Biafra group said it has no hands in the criminal activities, reiterating that its members remained peaceful and focused on how to secure the referendum date. It vowed that those hired for such impersonation and demonization would soon incur its wrath and that of Eastern Security Network (ESN) operatives.

9. Details Emerge On What Tinubu Told APC NWC Members During Visit

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, met with members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). Naija News reports the meeting between Tinubu and the party leaders took place at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja. As earlier reported by this platform, a heavy security presence was put in place for the meeting while visits to the APC secretariat was restricted as a means of crowd control measure and for security purposes. The meeting also had in attendance, former Borno State Governor and APC vice presidential candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima. The meeting among other things, discussed party strategies and plans to win the forthcoming 2023 general elections in the country, our correspondent gathered. A chieftain of the APC, Joe Igbokwe took to his Facebook page to share a video revealing more details of what transpired during the meeting, particular, Tinubu captured addressing the NWC members.

10. 2023: Atiku Candidacy Is Putting A Sharp Knife On Things – Joe Igbokwe

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe has advanced reasons former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should not contest the 2023 presidential election. According to Igbokwe, it is the turn of the south to produce the next President of Nigeria after President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should not be on the ballot. Naija News reports Igbokwe, who is the Special Adviser on Drainage and Water Resources to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made his view known on Wednesday via a post on his Facebook page. He claimed those pushing the Atiku candidacy are putting a sharp knife on things that have held Nigeria together since independence.
